Nottingham Forest tipped as 'likeliest destination' in transfer fight for £17.5m-rated ace

Nottingham Forest reportedly appears “to be the likeliest destination” for Maxwel Cornet in the race for the Burnley ace’s signature.

A number of Premier League clubs are keen on the attacker, following the Clarets’ relegation to the Championship. Along with the Reds, Everton and Fulham have also been credited with an interest.

According to the Daily Mail, previous offers from the Toffees and the Cottagers comprise loans with a fee and an option to pay about £20m in 12 months’ time. But it is claimed Burnley want Forest to shell out £17.5m to meet Cornet’s release clause in one go, or up that amount to secure his signature.

Although it has been suggested the 25-year-old wants a move where he can play European football in the coming season, the Mail have the Reds down as front-runners. They say, as it stands, the City Ground “appears to be the likeliest destination” for the Ivory Coast international.

Cornet made the switch to Turf Moor from Lyon 12 months ago. In a campaign where the Clarets struggled, he hit nine goals in 26 league appearances.

Forest have made 10 first-team signings so far this summer - as well as Brandon Aguilera, who has headed out on loan - in a £70m shopping spree. Their transfer business is not finished yet, however, and adding to their attacking options remains a priority.

Prior to the arrival of Jesse Lingard last week, head coach Steve Cooper said: "How many players are we going to sign? I don't know. But what I do know is the guys who are here are working really hard and are trying to get ready for the season.

"I want to be very clear that we've had no alternative than to bring in players, because we had loan players and some players have left for different reasons. We've had no alternative but to change things around a little bit.”
