Nottingham Forest 'target' turns down number of offers

Nottingham Forest ‘target’ Lawrence Shankland says he turned down offers from a number of clubs to sign for Dundee United.

The free agent striker was said to have attracted a lot of interest this summer after his contract at Ayr United came to an end, and seemingly had his pick of clubs to choose from.

A prolific season in the Scottish Championship, where he bagged 34 goals in 41 appearances, saw him linked with Hull City, Sunderland, Swansea City, Celtic, Rangers and the Reds – the latter while Martin O’Neill was still in charge.

But Shankland says he felt Dundee was “the best club for my next step”.

“I want to continue my development at Dundee United,” he told the official website after putting pen to paper on a three-year deal.

“Despite having offers from clubs in both Scotland and England, it is clear to me that this is the best club for my next step.

“I cannot wait to get started in tangerine.”

Head coach Robbie Neilson said of the 24-year-old: “This is a massive signing for the club.

“A lot of credit must go to the owners, the board and the recruitment staff for the hard work in making this happen.

“We are getting a player who has shown how good he can be at this level and we believe we can make him an even better player with the facilities and coaching that is available at Dundee United.”
