Nottingham Forest target's intriguing comment as defender makes 'decision'

In-demand striker Jerry Yates says he is looking forward to a “really exciting season” with Blackpool, amid speculation about his future.

Nottingham Forest are believed to be among a number of clubs keen on the front man, with Blackburn Rovers, Bristol City, West Bromwich Albion and Scottish giants Rangers also linked.

A sparkling season in front of goal, in which he helped fire the Seasiders to promotion to the Championship has put Yates firmly in the spotlight and earned him plenty of admirers.

The 24-year-old bagged 23 goals in 54 appearances in all competitions last term, as Neil Critchley’s side sealed their place in the second tier via the play-offs.

'Decision' made

Almeria are said to be ready to terminate the contract of Nottingham Forest-linked Mathieu Peybernes by mutual agreement.

But it will be Real Zaragoza where the defender heads to next, as a free agent, according to Spanish newspaper AS.

The Reds were first reported to have been eyeing up Peybernes a year ago, and were said to have reignited their interest this summer.

Championship rivals Swansea City were also reportedly keen on him again, amid claims they had seen a £2m bid rejected 12 months ago, while it was suggested some French sides were in the mix for his signature, too.

Squad strength

With the Championship fixtures out this week and pre-season drawing closer, speculation continues about how Chris Hughton’s Nottingham Forest squad will look come August.

There’s no getting away from the importance of this transfer window for the Reds, as they target a promotion push next term.

They have yet to make any new signings, but have seen 12 players depart through loans expiring and contracts coming to an end.

Currently, there are 24 players on the books, plus youngsters coming through who will hope to get their chance to impress.

We take a look at how Forest stand in each area of the pitch.

Show of support

Two dates are ingrained in Garry Birtles’ memory.

The day his wife underwent surgery, having been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer barely a month earlier. And the day she was released from hospital.

“I’ll remember those two dates for the rest of my life,” says the Nottingham Forest legend.

“Samantha was diagnosed in April 2019. She was operated on on 17 May, 2019, and came out of hospital on 1 June. I was on my way down to Royal Ascot for the Derby. I was on the M25. Didn’t know she was coming out that day. She rang and said, ‘can you come get me’. I was stuck in traffic on the M25, so her mum had to pick her up.

“I saw her when she got back.”

Samantha is only 56. Her condition is terminal.

But amid devastating, desperate news, has been an outpouring of love and support - both for the Birtles’ and their fundraising efforts for Treetops Hospice, who have been providing care for Samantha.
