Nottingham Forest suffer potential transfer blow as target goes off injured in Premier League clash

Nottingham Forest's chances of signing one of their January transfer targets could be over after he suffered an injury today.

The Reds are keen to bring in Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle, who was handed a rare start for the Premier League side.

However, he has gone off in the first half against Wolves with what is reported to be a hamstring injury.

If that is the case, even a relatively minor injury could have a big impact on the chances of a loan move taking place.

Magpies boss Steve Bruce is a fan of the player, but he has often played one man - Joelinton - up front this season.

"I've said many times he's an important part," Bruce said.

"If we're going to go forward, we need three or four strikers.

"I don't know how many times I've said it about Dwight Gayle but I've always thought very highly of him.

""I think I tried to buy him three times but could never quite afford him. I hope he stays and honestly hope he will get his chance sooner rather than later and when he gets it I hope he takes it."

Southampton's Che Adams, Crystal Palace's Glenn Murray and Arsenal youngster Eddie Nketiah are also understood to be on Forest's shortlist.
