Nottingham Forest striker a summer transfer target for Championship rivals

Nottingham Forest striker Lyle Taylor is believed to be a target for Championship rivals Stoke City.

The 31-year-old found himself down the pecking order at the City Ground after joining the Reds last summer.

And he has been at the centre of transfer speculation in recent days, with Middlesbrough, Blackburn Rovers and Barnsley all linked with a loan move.

The Potters are also understood to be keeping track of him.

And the Daily Mirror report they are set to open talks over signing the forward, with Forest willing to listen for offers.

Taylor only signed for the Reds as a free agent last summer, after leaving Charlton Athletic, but found himself down the pecking order during his first season at the club.

He made 42 appearances in the Garibaldi during the 2020/21 campaign, with 25 of those coming from off the substitutes’ bench.

Amid Forest’s collective goalscoring troubles, he found the net five times in total, with his last strike coming against Cardiff City in the FA Cup back in January.

Boss Chris Hughton is plotting an overhaul of his squad during the transfer window in anticipation of a top six challenge next term.

Strengthening his attacking resources is a priority, with the club already one forward down following Glenn Murray’s decision to hang up his boots - albeit the 37-year-old was set to be let go, regardless of his career choice.

Hughton has made it clear he will look to boost his team’s firepower in the coming weeks and months.

Forest were among the division’s lowest scorers during the campaign just gone, and the manager has previously said: "We need to demand more from individuals.

“It's quite obvious we need more goals in the team.

"Those goals have got to be provided by players who are in the squad - or new players that come here next season, because we know we'll have to recruit in the summer. There will be players who come here next season who can give us something."

Hughton said of Taylor back in April: “At this moment, we’ve got three number nines. It’s a personal choice of who I play, who I start or who I bring in.

“A fair assessment of Lyle’s season would probably be that it’s been very up and down.

“Probably in a period of time where there have been improvements in his game and he’s got to a level, I’ve got other choices as well.

“That becomes a decision making process.

“But this is a player who is contracted here. He is in the first year of his contract.

“There have been so many stories of individuals who have been in a similar position, where the first season didn’t go as well as they would have liked, for whatever reason - but then that changes. The second season does or the third season does.

“That’s always your thinking. Not only with Lyle, but with any player.”
