Nottingham Forest star answers that big Championship question

Nottingham Forest ace Joe Lolley believes completing the Championship season “however long it takes” is the fairest course of action - even if that means playing behind closed doors.

The Reds’ campaign has been suspended indefinitely due to the coronavirus crisis, with the country currently in lockdown.

Before play was brought to a halt, Sabri Lamouchi’s men had been pushing for a place in the Premier League.

With nine games left to play, they are fifth in the table, and Lolley hopes they get the chance to see their promotion tilt through - as long as it doesn’t put people’s health and safety at risk.

"I think closing the season in the safest way possible once it’s deemed right to do so is the fairest way for me personally,” he told whoscored.com.

“I understand playing behind closed doors isn’t ‘football’ but this is a very one off situation."

The authorities have expressed their wish for the 2019/20 term to be played to its conclusion, but various suggestions have still been put forward as to how it could pan out.

But with much uncertainty about when it would even be possible for football to resume, Lolley says: “Everything seems so unclear that it’s not worth thinking about as anything could happen."

He adds: "I realise the difficulty across the board to make the right decision and of course there’s player contracts etc, but I’d still push for the season finishing however long it takes.

“It just seems fair in that respect.

“Rules can always change for upcoming seasons to make it shorter or change the dates in which the season is played leading up to the 2022 World Cup, so there are plenty of options."
