Nottingham Forest stance amid transfer links with Newcastle United man

Nottingham Forest boss Chris Hughton is keen to strengthen his midfield options before the summer transfer window comes to a close.

The Reds are among a number of clubs to have been linked with Newcastle United's Matty Longstaff, who is said to be available on loan.

However, at present, it is understood a move to the City Ground is looking unlikely for the 21-year-old.

Forest do, though, remain interested in re-signing James Garner, after he impressed during a spell in the Garibaldi in the second half of last season. But there is no shortage of competition for the Manchester United youngster.

Three new arrivals have been added to Hughton's squad so far this summer, in Ethan Horvath, Philip Zinckernagel and Jordi Osei-Tutu.

The club have less than two weeks in which to conduct the remainder of their business before the window closes, with several areas of the pitch still in need of reinforcements.

Hughton has spoken about bringing in new additions in the centre of the pitch.

With Harry Arter out of favour, he has Ryan Yates, Jack Colback, Cafu and teenager Tyrese Fornah available, with Yates and Colback being the first-choice partnership so far.

“I understand what some might think. Some might think they are more defensive type players than offensive,” Hughton said of the duo.

“It’s a balance for what we’ve got. Jack is a left-sided player, so it gives us a nice balance.

“They are part of a midfield group that we have at the moment that gives us options, but we would like more options in there.

“Tyrese (Fornah) did well in the cup, but he’s still very much a developing player.

“Cafu gives us something a little bit different. We used him in a two at times last season. Probably we see him more as an advanced player, as a No.10.

“But with what we’ve got at the moment, we are always trying to use our wide players very much offensively. Brennan Johnson is more of an offensive player than a link player. So in effect you’ve got four forward players - your two wide players and Brennan, who plays high up.

“You just need that consistency of two in midfield who are going to supply, but who are also going to help the back four not concede goals.

“It’s trying to get the right balance.”
