Nottingham Forest set to miss out on Aston Villa and former Bristol City striker

Nottingham Forest are set to miss out on former Bristol City striker Jonathan Kodjia with the Aston Villa forward set for a medical elsewhere.

Qatari club Al Gharafa have tweeted on Thursday evening to announce that the Ivory Coast international will be travelling to the club with a view of joining permanently.

The tweet said: "Ivorian International Jonathan Kodjia will arrive in Doha tomorrow, god willing, to perform a medical examination. [This comes] in preparation for signing a contract with Al-Gharafa.”

Kodjia has struggled to nail down a first team place at the newly promoted side and has only managed 112 minutes for Aston Villa so far this season in all competitions, scoring two goals.

He moved to Aston Villa from Bristol City in 2016 after scoring 19 goals in 52 games for the Robins. And he continued his impressive Championship form for Villa when signing, scoring 19 goals in his first season, but has struggled with the step up to the Premier League.

With the forward out of contract at the end of the season, Villa boss Dean Smith has made no secret of the fact that the forward will be leaving.

Speaking at Villa Park on Kodjia's future last week, Smith said: "Everyone knows Jonathan's out of contract at the end of the season.

"At his age, he's allowed to talk to clubs at the moment.

“He hasn't trained with us this week and won't be involved on Saturday."

And Kodjia now looks to have got his move. Nottingham Forest had been linked with a move for Kodjia as they hunt for a striker to support Lewis Grabban, but will now have to look elsewhere.

Forest were battling Bristol City for Arsenal forward Eddie Nketiah, but the youngster is now set to stay at the Emirates. Both clubs have also been linked with a move for out-of-favour Crystal Palace Connor Wickham.

However Sheffield Wednesday and Bordeaux have also expressed an interest in a loan move for Wickham, so City and Forest have some competition in that department.

Kodjia will link up with former Fulham boss Slavisa Jokanovic at Al-Gharafa.
