Nottingham Forest's 'option' on striker Lewis Grabban

Lewis Grabban, the striker normally immune to dry spells in front of goal, endured his worst season at the City Ground during the last campaign.

At the peak of his footballing powers in 2019/20, reaching the 20-goal mark, Grabban spearheaded Nottingham Forest's play-off challenge.

But the 33-year-old weighed in with just six goals in 28 appearances last term, with Forest struggling to create chances for their fox in the box centre forward.

Chris Hughton's men steered themselves away from relegation with a strong defence.

But Forest only eclipsed two sides for average shots on target per match, in Birmingham and Bristol City, averaging 2.9, as per WhoScored.

Significant improvements are needed in the supply for the forward line if Forest are to mount a charge on the play-offs this time around.

A change of roles has been a major talking point and it has been proposed the centre forward has the intelligence to drop into a deeper role next season, in behind the striker.

Where do you think Forest should play Grabban next season? Let us know in the comments section below...

Nottinghamshire Live's Forest correspondent Sarah Clapson gave her views on the proposal in her weekly Facebook live video, deciding whether dropping Grabban into the number 10 role would be a potential option going forward.

"The link up side to Grabban's game is pretty good, and he does drop a bit deeper even when he is that lone man upfront. He can link the play nicely, I think we saw towards the end of the season when Chris Hughton tried him in that role. I thought he did okay, I thought he looked pretty good," she said.

"His strength really is being in and around that box, he's a goalscorer in and around that area. I know we didn't see that last season, and we didn't get the best out of him, but that's where he gets the majority of his goals, and that's where he is most effective.

"I think it is an option to use him as that number 10 and have him in that link role, but I think he is more effective as that main man. I think you have to find someone who can play alongside him in that sense and help create chances for him because that was the big problem last season, he didn't have too many chances really, he was so isolated.

"He struggled to get in games and didn't get involved as much. Increase the supply to him, increase the number of chances he gets and we will probably see a different Lewis Grabban again next season. He can score goals, he's shown he can do it and he's done it at this level before."

With Forest said to be interested in Fortuna Sittard attacking midfielder Zian Flemming, perhaps they will have partly fixed their issue of supplying their centre forwards of service sooner rather than later.

The 22-year-old scored 12 times and assisted seven in the Eredivisie last season.

It should be acknowledged that dropping Grabban into a deeper role is an option, but Forest can ill afford to lose his goalscoring abilities, with a move to a deeper role possibly hampering his ability to seize on chances in and around the box.

Quality service into him could see him rediscover his predatory instincts in front of goal and propel himself closer to the 20-goal mark once more.

It is true that forwards in the ilk of Grabban never lose their touch in front of goal. And finding the right players to unlock his goalscoring touch will be crucial to Forests chances next season.
