Nottingham Forest's hopes of season restart boosted by this decision

Switzerland will resume football in their top-flight behind closed doors on June 8 as long as the coronavirus outbreak does not worsen, it has been confirmed this afternoon.

Nottingham Forest 's hopes of their season restarting could receive a big boost from their colleagues in Europe, with the Swiss Football Association keen to finish their season.

Forest have seen their campaign suspended until further notice by the English Football League (EFL) with Sabri Lamouchi 's side playing their last game on March 6, a 3-0 defeat at home to Millwall.

The Reds will be desperate for the campaign to reach some form of conclusion, with the club fighting for promotion to the Premier League after a two-decade absence from the top flight.

Fifth-placed Forest have cemented themselves in the play-offs, opening up a five point gap between themselves and Bristol City in seventh place.

Football in England remains suspended until it is safe to resume, while there have been key developments in the Netherlands and France in the last week.

The Eredivisie ruled last week there would be no promotion or relegation for the 2019-20 season last week, while Ligue 1 declared the season over although how the final table will be decided is yet to be determined.

Reports in the national media have linked the Premier League with a June resumption, with discussions ongoing about 'project restart'.

On Wednesday, it was confirmed that plans would be put in place for the return of the Swiss Pro League after the government relaxed their Covid-19 measures.

The Bundesliga is also targeting a restart in May without supporters, although that could be pushed back to June, alongside neighbours Switzerland.

For fans of Liverpool, Leeds United and Coventry City, who lead the top three tiers of English football, this could be seen as welcome news as they look to earn promotion and claim their league title.

In the Championship, West Bromwich Albion are also battling for promotion while the play-off places are currently occupied by Fulham, Brentford, Forest and Preston North End.
