Nottingham Forest's Adlene Guedioura helps Algeria to 2019 Africa Cup of Nations title

Nottingham Forest midfielder Adlene Guedioura helped his Algeria side to Africa Cup of Nations glory on Friday night.

The Desert Warriors beat Senegal 1-0 thanks to a second-minute strike from Baghdad Bounedjah.

Bounedjah's heavily deflected strike, which cannoned off Salif Sane and looped into the net, came after good work from the Al Sadd striker.

He out-paced Crystal Palace midfielder Cheikhou Kouyate before firing on goal, his strike earning Algeria a second AFCON title after their 1990 home success.

Senegal, able to call upon the talent of Liverpool striker Sadio Mane and Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye, couldn't find a reply to that early opener.

Guedioura, earning his 49th cap for his country , anchored the midfield making his seventh appearance of the competition that began nearly a month ago.

He was in the thick of the action on the 48th minute, when a cross from Ismaïla Sarr struck his arm and referee Neant Alioum pointed to the penalty spot.

However, video assistant referee (VAR) technology overturned the decision.

He will be afforded an extended break to celebrate the first silverware of his career, before returning for Forest's Championship opener against West Bromwich Albion on Saturday, August 5 (5.30pm).
