Nottingham Forest predicted XI v Preston as James Garner and Joe Lolley miss out

Nottingham Forest will be boosted by the return of Max Lowe at the weekend, when they face Preston North End.

The defender was ineligible to feature against parent club Sheffield United in midweek, but will be back in contention for Saturday’s clash.

And that leaves Reds boss Steve Cooper with something of a dilemma.

Jack Colback stepped into the left wing-back role in Lowe’s absence as Forest came from behind to draw 1-1 with the Blades, with another late goal securing a hard-fought point.

Having played left-back before in his career, it wasn’t entirely unfamiliar territory for the former Newcastle United man, and he continued his excellent recent form.

Lowe offers more attacking threat down that flank, though, and will almost certainly come straight back into the XI.

But Cooper must decide whether to move Colback back into midfield or stick with James Garner as Ryan Yates’ partner in the centre of the pitch.

Garner did put in some tasty corner deliveries on Tuesday night, and if things had gone another way he could have had a couple of assists, having teed up Lyle Taylor and Joe Worrall.

It’s generally been a slow start to the season for the Manchester United loanee, however, and he couldn’t quite impose himself on the City Ground game in the same way as he did many times last term.

Would he benefit from a run of matches, though? Is that the key to getting him up to top form? Or does Colback’s string of fine performances mean he should keep his place?

Garner’s inclusion was one of two changes to the line-up against United, with Taylor for Lewis Grabban the other.

It was the latter who came off the bench to grab the all-important equaliser, while Taylor largely struggled for service in the 63 minutes he was on the pitch.

Managing Grabban carefully is important, given his previous injury troubles and his age, at 33, but he should be rested well enough to start against the Lilywhites.

Cooper might also consider another change in the attacking trio in his 3-4-3 formation.

Joe Lolley went close to opening the scoring in midweek, and made some promising, probing runs. He did look to have taken a slight knock at one stage, though, which could pave the way for Philip Zinckernagel to come back into the team.

Forest go into the game on the banks of the Trent looking to get back to winning ways after three outings without a victory.

It will be their final fixture before two weeks off due to the latest international break.

Predicted Forest XI: Samba; Worrall, Figueiredo, McKenna; Spence, Yates, Colback, Lowe; Zinckernagel, Grabban, Johnson.
