Nottingham Forest power rankings: Joe Lolley and Lewis Grabban key but experienced players frozen out

Nottingham Forest are four games into the season after a summer which saw them change manager and add 12 new signings.

With the squad having had a chance to settle a little, we bring you our first set of Forest power rankings, as we look at where every player stands heading into tomorrow's trip to Charlton.

Goalkeepers

1 Aro Muric

2 Brice Samba

3 Jordan Smith

4 Costel Pantilimon

Costel Pantilimon ended last season as the undisputed first choice, but he is now down to fourth in the rankings after the decision to bring in Aro Muric and Brice Samba.

Forest are ready to let Pantilimon, who is on a good first team wage, go with him having been linked with Olympiacos.

Muric enjoyed an inauspicious debut against West Brom, but he looked confident against Birmingham and Sabri Lamouchi made it clear he is his number one.

Right-back

1 Matty Cash

2 Carl Jenkinson

With Tendayi Darikwa out with a serious injury and youngster Jayden Richardson out on loan, Matty Cash is vying with Carl Jenkinson for the role.

It was perhaps a surprise to see Cash start against Birmingham on Saturday, but he was excellent and it is hard to see him sitting out Wednesday's game.

3 Central defender

1 Michael Dawson

2 Joe Worrall

3 Tobias Figueiredo

4 Chema Rodriguez

5 Alexander Milosevic

Michael Dawson's leadership has proven to be essential and Joe Worrall is revelling in his role as the young apprentice. Tobias Figueiredo does not appear to have done much wrong, but he will have to stay patient.

Sabri Lamouchi would not have signed Chema Rodriguez if he did not expect him to play, so the left-footed Spaniard will push Worrall hard.

Alexander Milosevic is a fan favourite, but he was only on the bench against Fleetwood Town in the Carabao Cup. Looks well down the pecking order.

Michael Hefele is available for transfer and Yohan Benalouane is injured.

Left-back

1 Jack Robinson

2 Yuri Ribeiro

Yuri Ribeiro did well against Fleetwood in his first Reds appearance, but Robinson is the first choice left-back still. The former Liverpool man was excellent against Birmingham.

Central midfield

1 Alfa Semedo

2 Samba Sow

3 Ben Watson

4 Tiago Silva

5 John Bostock

6 Claudio Yacob

7 Liam Bridcutt

Ben Watson is not a fan favourite, but Martin O'Neill and Lamouchi both rate him. The veteran has been a steadying influence in front of the back four this season.

Samba Sow and Alfa Semedo have both shown they can play further up the pitch to great effect with John Bostock having a decent debut against Fleetwood. It is fair to suggest he will get sharper with games.

Tiago Silva looks like a shrewd signing who is learning with each game.

Claudio Yacob and Liam Bridcutt look to have no future at the club based on the sheer number of players in front of them - and that is without Ryan Yates and Joao Carvalho returning from injury.

Sammy Ameobi heads on (Dan Westwell)

Right wing

1 Joe Lolley

2 Matty Cash

3 Sammy Ameobi

4 Albert Adomah

5 Arvin Appiah

Arvin Appiah did well against Fleetwood, but the teenager did not make the bench against Birmingham. Joe Lolley was back to his best at the weekend and Ameobi's favoured position is the right wing.

Cash is seen as a right-back at present, but he is more experienced as a right winger.

Left wing

1 Sammy Ameobi

2 Albert Adomah

3 Joe Lolley

4 Arvin Appiah

Sammy Ameobi kept Albert Adomah out of the team on Saturday and made the most of his chance. Joe Lolley can play on the left wing, of course, but his favoured position is cutting in from the right.

Striker

1 Lewis Grabban

2 Rafa Mir

With Daryl Murphy and Jason Cummings frozen out, Lewis Grabban is the undisputed first choice. Rafa Mir provides the only back-up.

The Spaniard has done okay coming off the bench, but he did very little in his only start against Fleetwood in the Carabao Cup.
