Nottingham Forest players 'let Steve Cooper down' in Brentford defeat

Jermaine Jenas believes the Nottingham Forest players 'let down' manager Steve Cooper during their 2-1 defeat at Brentford on Saturday.

The Reds were 1-0 up for much of the contest at the Gtech Community Stadium after Danilo's goal in first-half stoppage time had put Steve Cooper's team on course for a vital three points.

But the Bees struck back with goals from Ivan Toney and Josh Dasilva late on to leave Forest stunned in their battle to stay in the Premier League. The Reds will now drop back down to the bottom three after Monday night's clash between Leicester City and Everton.

And Jenas, the former Forest player and Match of the Day pundit, has highlighted the errors from the Forest players which contributed to Brentford's comeback.

"He (Cheikhou Kouyate) plays a role in the second goal as well as Lodi, an experienced player who has come from Atletico Madrid," he said on the BBC highlights show.

"Get him down the line and then defend the cross, but instead, Lodi allows Josh Dasilva on to his favoured left foot. Gibbs-White is picking someone up, but Kouyate has got to get out and block the cross. Both just stood on their heels.

"You've got to be throwing your body at the ball. You're fighting for your lives, so I think the players let the manager down today."

Next up for Forest is a relegation six-pointer at the City Ground against Southampton on Monday, May 8 (kick-off 8 pm). And Jenas is under no doubt over how important that game is for the Reds.

He added: "It's huge and if they had gone into that with three points in the bag [from Brentford] it would have been a lot easier for them. But they're gonna have to dig deep and those fans will be behind them, so we'll see. It's a huge game."
