Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis makes generous donation

Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis is to make a donation to help schools affected by an earthquake which struck the island of Crete earlier this year.

The shipping magnate, who also owns Greek giants Olympiacos, is to donate housing to help schools in Arkalochori and Kasteli which had been damaged by an earthquake.

A statement from Olympiacos said: “The President of PAE Olympiacos, Mr. Vangelis Marinakis, will proceed with the donation of houses so that the schools of Arkalochori and Kasteli, in Crete, will operate immediately.

“The donation concerns 12 school rooms and the necessary rooms for other infrastructures (e.g. offices) in the General Lyceum of Arkalochori and nine school rooms and the necessary rooms for the infrastructures, in the General Lyceum of Kasteli.”

Marinakis took over Forest in May 2017 and has been at the helm of Olympiacos since 2010.

He undertakes a lot of charity work and is heavily involved in local civic life in his home town of Piraeus.

In November 2017, Marinakis financially assisted an initiative to provide aid and infrastructure support to the victims of flooding in the Greek town of Mandra.

And the previous year, at Marinakis’ direct instruction, Olympiacos provided food, water, clothing and footwear to refugees who were stranded at the gates of the Port of Piraeus.

More than 70,000 meals and 150,000 items of clothing and toys were distributed in a two-month period until state assistance took over.

Since he took charge, he has also been keen to ensure Forest help the local and wider community with charity initiatives.
