Nottingham Forest old boys released by Championship rivals

Former Nottingham Forest duo Barrie McKay and Kieron Freeman have both been released by Swansea City.

The Swans have confirmed their retained list as they prepare for another season with Forest in the Championship after their play-off final defeat to Brentford at Wembley.

McKay and Freeman will be leaving the Liberty Stadium at the end of their contracts this summer, along with Andre Ayew and Declan John.

Arnold-born Freeman began his career at Forest, making a couple of senior appearances before joining rivals Derby County.

The Wales international defender also had loan spells with Notts County and Mansfield Town before a permanent stint with Sheffield United.

After a loan at Portsmouth, he was briefly at Swindon Town before linking up with Swansea on a short-term deal in January.

However, the 29-year-old full-back only made one appearance for the Welsh club - in the FA Cup defeat to Manchester City.

McKay joined Forest from Rangers in 2017 for a reported fee of £500,000 and spent one season at the City Ground, making 28 appearances and scoring five goals.

The Scotland international winger signed for Swansea in the summer of 2018.

He played 39 times for the Swans, and scored three goals.

The 26-year-old spent the 2021-22 campaign on loan with League One side Fleetwood Town.

"Everyone at Swansea City wishes them well in their future careers," said the club in a statement.

Meanwhile, Swansea have offered a new one-year deal to long-serving forward Wayne Routledge as he continues his recovery from knee surgery.

Second-year scholars Scott Butler and Michael Murphy have been offered their first professional contracts with the club.

Swansea players retained: Adrian Akande, Steven Benda, Ryan Bennett, Jake Bidwell, George Byers, Ben Cabango, Rio Campbell, Brandon Cooper, Ollie Cooper, Liam Cullen, Yan Dhanda, Cameron Evans, Jay Fulton, Jordon Garrick, Josh Gould, Matt Grimes, Ben Hamer, Harry Jones, Joel Latibeaudiere, Jamal Lowe, Ryan Manning, Lincoln McFayden, Kyle Naughton, Connor Roberts, Tivonge Rushesha, Korey Smith, Josh Thomas, Lewis Webb, Morgan Whittaker, Daniel Williams.
