Nottingham Forest need to change mentality not players this summer

Nottingham Forest's squad might need a shift in mentality rather than an overhaul of players this summer.

That is the verdict of former Reds midfielder David Prutton, who points to the success Marcelo Bielsa has enjoyed this season with a largely unchanged Leeds United squad at the top of the Championship.

Instead, Sky Sports presenter Prutton feels Forest may need as few as two players next season - a striker and a midfielder - if they miss out on promotion to the Premier League.

"You have to look at what a squad needs over the course of a season. You always look at the spine of the team, but what I look at is the mentality," he said.

Fixture list gives Nottingham Forest reason for optimism, but expect disappointment in the end

"Look at Leeds, they're virtually the same squad as last season, bar Patrick Bamford and Barry Douglas. It shows you don't have to have an overhaul of players.

"You can have a change in mentality and expectation. Forest haven't held on to leads in games.

"They've come back in games, but they not necessarily gone on to win. There's something not quite ticking along as it needs to be."

Prutton feels a new striker is essential in the summer if Forest remain in the Championship, with the Reds heavily reliant on 16-goal striker Lewis Grabban this season.

Grabban has scored once this year after struggling with injury and the Reds have failed to find another scorer - or group of scorers - in his absence.

Nottingham Forest's Joe Lolley is marked by Aston Villa's Tammy Abraham and John McGinn (Dan Westwell)

"They probably need one other striker to work with Lewis Grabban. I don't think a whole spending spree is the order of the day," Prutton said.

"They could maybe do with more legs in midfield.

"Joe Lolley has been superb all season. He's had a real effect on games. It's hard to be a difference maker on the pitch and he's done that.

"Grabban has been missed massively recently, with Forest really looking to Lolley. No one has got near him for goals scored.

Should Nottingham Forest play the same way from youth academy to first team?

"That's not to say you need two heavy scorers, but if Grabban is out, you need to spread the goals out and Forest haven't done that enough.

"They haven't got that return from their other attacking players. Someone like Joao Carvalho is more of an attacking midfielder than a forward but he's not produced a huge amount of assists.

"They will need one more forward in the summer."
