Nottingham Forest 'miss out on' Premier League midfielder as rivals swoop

Nottingham Forest are said to have missed out on signing Aston Villa midfielder Conor Hourihane.

According to The Athletic, the Reds were interested in a move for the Republic of Ireland international - as were Bournemouth.

But he is said to have agreed to put pen to paper for Championship rivals Swansea City on a loan deal for the rest of the season.

Hourihane has found game time limited for the Premier League outfit this term.

He has made just five appearances for Villa, with his most recent outing coming in November, in a 2-1 defeat at West Ham United.

Forest boss Chris Hughton is keen to strengthen his attacking options during the transfer window this month.

He is believed to be keen on adding a midfielder, as well as someone capable of playing in a more advanced forward role - on the wing, or potentially as a number 10.

After Saturday’s victory over Millwall, he said: "We are still working as hard as we can. And if we do (bring players in), then great.

"We won't bring players in just for the sake of it because we do have a big squad and we've tried to get that balance a little bit different, which is why a couple have gone out already.

"But January's a very difficult time. What is certainly more important is finishing the end of the month with, if we can, a nice balance to squad.

"But more the important one for us would be if we have an opportunity to bring players in and improve the squad.”
