Nottingham Forest matches could be played at 'regional hubs' - report

Nottingham Forest matches could be played at "regional hubs" under a new plan reportedly being considered by the English Football League.

The Reds' season is currently suspended until further notice as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

Sabri Lamouchi's men are fifth in the Championship table - in the play-off zone - with nine fixtures remaining.

It is hoped that the campaign can be completed when it is deemed safe, though it is not yet clear when that might be.

One idea apparently being explored by the EFL is the possibility of hosting multiple fixtures at a select few approved stadiums around the country.

The Standard reports that the EFL's preferred option is to play all matches behind closed doors at the usual home ground but have begin contingency planning in case that is "not safe or practical".

It adds that selected stadiums in London, the South West, the Midlands, the North East and the North West would be approved for action under the proposal.

The report states: "The plans will allow the League to assess the suitability of stadiums to stage fixtures in the post-coronavirus landscape.

"Limiting the number of venues would ease the pressure on emergency services around the country and help ensure the safety of those involved."

The Standard adds that clubs have been informed of the plan in a letter from the EFL.

It is not clear which stadiums would be used, or if they could potentially host matches from all three divisions of the league.

Forest Green Rovers chairman Dale Vince has said he would be open to the idea.

"I don't think we're at that level of discussion yet but I've seen the suggestion (of playing at neutral venues)," he told the Press Association.

"I would say it's a possibility because there's no home and away advantage for anyone any more is there?

"I just wouldn't be bothered. It won't matter that much if you're playing at home or playing away if it's in an empty stadium.

"I think a lot of people would just be happy if we could finish the season, and it's no real hardship if we had to do that somewhere else and not in front of a crowd. In the scheme of things, that's not a real hardship."
