Nottingham Forest manager candidate watches Championship rivals as rumours swirl

Former Preston North End boss Alex Neil watched Blackburn Rovers at the weekend amid claims he is ready for a return to the dugout.

Neil had tongues wagging at the City Ground last Wednesday when he was spotted in the stands as the Reds lost 2-0 at home to Middlesbrough in what proved to be Chris Hughton's last game in charge.

And according to the Sun on Sunday, Neil is out and about watching games again as he looks to land a new job having left Preston back in March after nearly four years in charge.

Neil has featured on the bookmakers' list as a potential candidate for the job at the City Ground and is currently fourth in the odds at a price of 22/1 with Sky Bet.

But the preferred choice by the Reds' hierarchy is ex-Swansea head coach Steve Cooper who is 1/20 to succeed Hughton and are closing in on his appointment.

A compensation package of around £1.2m has reportedly been agreed with Cooper still technically on gardening leave after departing the Swans at the end of July.

The Sun on Sunday reported at the weekend that Cooper already has his eye on a January signing with Jay Fulton, a player he managed at Swansea, said to be on his radar.

Steven Reid is currently in charge of the club on an interim basis while Forest continue negotiations with Cooper and he got off to a fine start as he led the Reds to their first victory of the season at Huddersfield on Saturday.

Goals from Lewis Grabban and an own goal from Lee Nicholls sealed a 2-0 win for Forest.
