The truth about those Dwight Gayle to Nottingham Forest transfer rumours

Reports linking Nottingham Forest with a move for Dwight Gayle are wide of the mark, NottinghamshireLive understands.

It was claimed this afternoon that the Reds have made an offer for the Newcastle United striker, with a £15 million permanent transfer to be sealed in the summer if Sabri Lamouchi's side are promoted.

The Reds currently sit in third place in the Championship, four points off Leeds United in top spot.

Forest have signed Nuno da Costa as backup to Lewis Grabban, with the Reds said to fill another spot in the squad by recalling forward Tyler Walker from Lincoln City.

But it won't be Gayle, who is still injured after suffering a hamstring problem in Newcastle's 1-1 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers earlier this month.

Newcastle boss Steve Bruce had previously said that he won't be leaving St James' Park this month, now that looks to be the case - at least with regard to a move to the City Ground.

And Forest fans have had their say as the rumour was quickly extinguished.

Here's the pick of the reaction on social media...

@Trents88: #nffc fans 20 minutes ago - "OMG OMG OMG we're getting Dwight Gayle.  Announce promotion now! #nffc fans now - "Phew, that was a close one.  Glad we didn't gamble on him"

@BenjiNFFC: Just been to the Doctors, bloody blowing a Gayle out there........ anyway what did I miss?

@gimble123: We don't need Gayle, if we signed him we have to change formation. 100% Agent talk imo plus he's injured

@Ldevlin24: Like we was ever going to be in for Gayle, chill out peeps... Grabban>

@DaveHolmes1: Gayle doesn’t make sense to be honest, the way the clubs run at the minute it seems a lot of money for a player who’s not going to be fit for another month or so and isn’t exactly proven in the PL. Stinks of an agent getting his clients name back out there.

@DGBCampbell: No complaints here.

@Grantnffc1: Don't need to be El Desperado like WBA and Fulham. Think we've been smart. Team morale high. Want to keep it that way.

@DarrenP26044012: Nottingham forest dont make them signings anyway
