Nottingham Forest loanee proves to be 'a little gem' in impressive debut

Nottingham Forest youngster Danny Preston has made a promising start to life on loan at Grimsby Town.

The 20-year-old got his first taste of Football League action when he started for Grimsby Town in their Carabao Cup clash with Morecambe on Saturday.

And the full-back didn’t take long to make his mark.

Preston put in an impressive performance, weighing in with an assist in the first round tie.

He also netted in the shoot-out which followed as the match finished at 1-1 after 90 minutes, but Ian Holloway’s side lost 4-3 on penalties to see their cup run come to an end.

The Reds loanee was nevertheless singled out as the star man by GrimsbyLive in their player ratings.

They wrote: “Town may have found a little gem here. Superb work in setting up the equaliser, and came up with a couple of vital blocks in the second half to prevent Morecambe finding a winner. An outstanding debut from the Nottingham Forest loanee.”

Preston has previously been on loan in the National League, making three appearances for Alfreton Town last season.

He will spend the campaign with the Mariners after making the move earlier this week, although it is said the deal will be reviewed in January.
