Nottingham Forest linked midfielder has ‘no regrets’ over January transfer decision

Nottingham Forest were one of a number of Championship clubs to be heavily linked with a January move for Shamrock Rovers midfielder Jack Byrne during the January transfer window.

The 24-year-old impressed during his time in Ireland, leading to much interest in him during January.

Forest, Stoke City and Preston North End were all said to be interested in the midfielder, but he instead opted to join Cypriot club APEOL Nicosia.

The player signed a two-and-a-half year contract with the club, who were then managed by former Republic of Ireland manager Mick McCarthy.

However, just days after completing his move to Cyprus, McCarthy was sacked and replaced by Savva Piursaitidis.

Bryne has since failed to gain a regular spot in the starting 11, with his season also disrupted by injuries.

Despite the upheaval of a new manager and the lack of game time so far, the midfielder still says that he has ‘no regrets’ over his decision, although he has said that he would like to play back in England one day.

“I definitely think the European style suits me. Most people understand that, he told the Irish Independent .

“People who have seen me play will probably say, ‘He suits Europe more than he suits England’. That’s not to say I couldn’t play in England as I would love to give it a go again one day.

“I had options to do that. But I chose to come here because it’s a big club. I think the style suits me, and I don’t regret it. I love it out here, it’s all going really well.

"It’s unfortunate I’ve had an injury, but the club have been great and are very supportive. I’m happy, it’s a big club. I think people outside of Cyprus maybe don’t realise it is such a big club.”
