Nottingham Forest legend Stuart Pearce recommended this Derby County player to his old side in the summer

Nottingham Forest legend Stuart Pearce phoned up his old side to recommend they sign Derby County defender Matt Clarke.

The former Reds player and manager made the claim on Tuesday night, during commentary of the 3-0 defeat of Derby County in the second round of the Carabao Cup for talkSPORT .

It is a game Clarke started in, following his omission for Saturday's 1-1 draw with West Bromwich Albion in the Championship.

The 22-year-old made the move from Portsmouth to Brighton and Hove Albion this summer and was immediately loaned out to the Rams for the season.

And Pearce has revealed he recommended the former Ipswich Town defender to Forest having worked with Clarke at Portsmouth prior to linking up with David Moyes at West Ham United in 2017.

“In the summer when I knew Matt Clarke was leaving Pompey, I called Forest,” said Pearce.

“He’s been outstanding, I told them I’ve worked with him and he’s a top player.”
