Nottingham Forest 'keen' on right back signing that would green light sale

Nottingham Forest are apparently 'keen' on Sheffield Wednesday full-back Liam Palmer to address their shortcomings on the right side of the defence.

The Reds have just one senior option in the position ahead of this afternoon's Championship opener against Coventry City in the form of Jordan Gabriel.

Carl Jenkinson is another that could conceivably fill that role, but he has reportedly been told he can find a new club, so a return to the first team picture seems unlikely.

Therefore, it is understandable why Chris Hughton is interested in recruiting in this area.

According to The Sun's Alan Nixon, Forest are 'keen on a deal' for the Worksop-born defender.

The Scotland international has one year remaining on his current contract at Hillsborough, so could be available in a cut-price deal this month or for free next summer.

Nixon also said that should all go to plan, and the Reds get their man, then Gabriel would be allowed to leave the City Ground.

The 22-year-old 'will be sold to either Blackpool or Sunderland' depending on whether a deal can be struck with Wednesday.

Gabriel spent last season on loan at the former and helped them to promotion out of League One via the play-offs.

The young full-back featured off the bench in both legs of the semi-finals against Oxford United but was an unused substitute in the final at Wembley Stadium.
