Nottingham Forest join long queue to sign highly-rated Newcastle midfielder

Nottingham Forest are among a long list of clubs hoping to sign Newcastle midfielder Matty Longstaff if the Magpies allow him to leave the club on loan next month.

Longstaff's season has been disrupted by injury which has prevented him from playing a major part in their Premier League campaign.

United must now decide whether to send him out on loan to help him back to fitness.

The Newcastle Chronicle report that Forest, as well as Derby, are part of a list of seven Championship clubs hoping to snare the talented midfielder.

They report: "There are a queue of Championship clubs waiting to loan Matty Longstaff if Newcastle decide to allow the midfielder out in January.

"Longstaff signed a new deal in the summer but injuries have hampered his chances this season. And Newcastle have a decision to make on whether to allow him to go out to get the minutes he desperately needs.

"Derby are one Championship club interested in him but East Midlands rivals Nottingham Forest are also credited with an interest. There are up to seven other clubs in the mix from the second tier."

Forest boss Chris Hughton said he is not expecting a busy January as he looks to ignite the Reds' season with his side facing Brentford at the City Ground this afternoon.

But Forest fans have been eager to see more energy in the middle of the park and have also clamoured for the return of Brennan Johnson from Lincoln City given his brilliant performances from the Imps.

Do you think a move for Longstaff would be good for Forest? Or would you prefer to bring Johnson back?
