Nottingham Forest 'in the hunt' for in-demand midfielder as Chris Hughton makes transfer admission

Nottingham Forest are said to be “in the hunt” for midfielder Kyle Dempsey - but they are not the only ones reportedly keen on the Gillingham man.

The 25-year-old only made the move to Priestfield last summer, after being released by Fleetwood Town.

But Football Insider claim he now has a host of clubs chasing his signature this month, with the Reds “interested in signing” Dempsey, along with Preston North End, Barnsley and Luton Town.

Forest boss Chris Hughton is understood to be keen to strengthen in midfield, as well as boost his attacking resources during the January window.

So far, the only transfer business at the City Ground has been to extend the loan deal of winger Anthony Knockaert and oversee the departures of Nicholas Ioannou and Tendayi Darikwa.

Hughton admitted after his side’s defeat to Middlesbrough on Wednesday night he may have to change his transfer plans, depending on the severity of an injury to Ryan Yates.

The Nigel Doughty Academy product limped off in the second half against Boro, with what looked to be a calf problem.

With Jack Colback and Harry Arter currently sidelined, if Yates is ruled out for any length of time, it could leave the Reds short in the centre of the pitch.

Asked if that could alter his thinking this month, Hughton said: “Possibly, but I probably don't want to jump into anything until we will find out the extent of it. We'd like to think that it's not too bad. But we'll have to wait and see.”

Gills skipper Dempsey has impressed so far this season, with 20 appearances and four goals to his name, as well as a couple of assists.
