Nottingham Forest 'in talks' to sign former Newcastle United striker

Nottingham Forest are reported to be "in talks" with free agent striker Facundo Ferreyra.

The 30-year-old striker has been in England previously, during a loan spell with Newcastle United, but failed to make a first team appearance for the club, and they, perhaps unsurprisingly, opted not to take up a £6million option to make the move permanent at the end of the season.

Ferreyra was, though, prolific before and after that spell at then-parent club Shakhtar Donetsk, scoring a very respectable 62 goals in 115 appearances over four seasons.

While there may be doubts over how these goals translate from Ukraine to the Championship, it should be noted that he did notch three goals in the Champions League against the likes of Feyenoord, Napoli and Roma as recently as 2017.

The reports are coming from Ferreyra's native Argentina, where Buenos Aires-based journalist César Luis Merlo revealed that "talks are underway" (via Sport Witness).

Merlo does go on to add that they are not yet close to being finalised, however.

He reports that both Forest and the player are "keen on the opportunity", with the player understandably believed to have 'the transfer in his possession' as a result of his free agency.

Ferreyra's most recent club was Celta Vigo in Spain.

Forest's struggles in front of goal are well documented, with Lewis Grabban yet to find the back of the net this season and fellow forward Lyle Taylor goalless since the opening day defeat to Coventry City.

The Reds did move to resolve this area of concern on transfer deadline day with the last-minute arrival of Xande Silva, but the rumours of a move for Bordeaux's Josh Maja that didn't materialise lend credit to these latest links to another option at the top of the pitch.
