Nottingham Forest handed transfer boost with target given good injury news

Nottingham Forest have been handed a potential transfer boost with the news that Dwight Gayle is set for a quick return to action.

The striker, who is rumoured to be a transfer target for the Reds as well as Championship promotion rivals West Bromwich Albion, Fulham and Sheffield Wednesday, suffered a hamstring injury on Saturday .

He was substituted 28 minutes into Newcastle's 1-1 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League at Molineux on Saturday, only his second start of the season.

The Daily Mail report that Gayle, initially fearing a six-week layoff, could be back in training as soon as this month.

And he is set to return to action in early February.

It was reported in The Telegraph last night that Steve Bruce will allow the forward to leave on loan for free this season, with a £20 million payment due at the end of the season if he manages to fire his new team to promotion.

Forest have been heavily linked with Gayle as they look to alleviate the pressure on Lewis Grabban who, with 14 goals this season, has led the line for Sabri Lamouchi's promotion-chaser.

Eddie Nketiah of Arsenal and Brighton and Hove Albion's Glenn Murray have also been touted as possible options.

Gayle is an experienced Championship marksman, with 23 of the former Peterborough United man's 59 second tier goals coming on loan with West Brom last season.
