Nottingham Forest handed transfer boost as Premier League club stand firm on defender

Nottingham Forest could have been handed a summer transfer boost with the news Burnley expect to retain star defender James Tarkowski.

The 28-year-old centre-half was subject to bids from Leicester City and West Ham last summer and is entering the final 12 months of his deal at Turf Moor.

He has previously rejected fresh terms but the Clarets appear ready to let him run down his contract, as they did with Aaron Lennon, Jeff Hendrick and Joe Hart a year ago..

"We have open lines of communication with him and his agent, as we do with all the players, and as far as I'm concerned he's a Burnley player," manager Sean Dyche said.

"Contractual situations are private and personal, or they should be, they're often not, but he's been fantastic

"He knows his contract is where it is, everyone knows that, but he'll be here as far as I'm concerned, it's simple.

"If someone wants to write a cheque for an immeasurable amount then that might be different, but at the moment he's a Burnley player and he's done very well again for us this season. He's a quality player."

The news will be welcome to Forest with Joe Worrall regularly touted as the man Burnley want to replace Tarkowski should he move on.

They could still look to sign an additional central defender, as they did when they spent £15m on Ben Gibson in 2018.

The month did not work out though as Gibson could not break into the team and he has since joined Norwich for a fee of up to £8m.

Tarkowski, who joined from Brentford five years ago, has forged a strong partnership with captain Ben Mee.
