Nottingham Forest handed promotion boost as rivals suffer star striker blow

Nottingham Forest will not have to face the Championship's joint top scorer at the City Ground next week.

Fulham will be without star striker Aleksandar Mitrovic for their trip to the East Midlands on Tuesday, July 7, after he was handed a three-match ban for violent conduct.

Retrospective action has been taken against the Serbian international after he elbowed Leeds United defender Ben White three minutes into Fulham's 3-0 defeat at Elland Road on Saturday.

The incident was missed by match officials at the time but based on the video evidence, Mitrovic was charged by the Football Association and has accepted his punishment.

"Aleksandar Mitrovic has been suspended for three matches following the Sky Bet Championship meeting between Leeds United and Fulham on Saturday 27th June," a Fulham statement said.

"Due to an incident that constituted violent conduct, Mitrovic will now sit out our fixtures with Queens Park Rangers, Birmingham City and Nottingham Forest."

Mitrovic is comfortably Fulham's top-scorer this season with 23 goals in 36 Championship appearances, leaving him level with Ollie Watkins of Brentford at the top of the division's scoring chart.

Scott Parker's side sit fifth in the table, seven points clear of seventh-placed Preston in the battle for play-off places.

Forest are just above Fulham on goal difference following their 3-1 victory over Huddersfield Town on Sunday.
