Nottingham Forest great explains why managers make the difference in play-offs

Nottingham Forest coach Andy Reid says managers will come into their own when teams battle in the play-offs.

Four clubs will go head-to-head for a place in the Premier League with the line-up to be finalised over the final matches this week.

West Bromwich Albion, Brentford and Fulham are guaranteed a play-off place at least, although they are still hoping to go up automatically along with Leeds.

The Reds and Cardiff are the favourites to secure a play-off spot with two of them, although Swansea can still force their way in, with Forest needing a point at Barnsley today to be sure they qualify.

Reds Under-23s coach Reid says managers can make a huge difference when the play-offs do come around.

"You have to be on your game. You have to be ready for it," he told BBC Radio Five Live.

"The teams have played each other twice. They know the tactics and how they play, then it becomes a battle between the managers.

"How can we get an edge tactically the managers would think."

Reid is fully familiar with the pitfalls of the play-offs having played in Forest's devastating defeat to Sheffield United in 2003, when the Reds lost after extra-time in the second leg.

"Sheffield United beat us in the play-offs. It's heartbreaking," he said.

"It takes time to get over it. Anyone who says it doesn't is lying.

"It takes a lot out of you. You need to turn that disappointment around."
