Nottingham Forest goalkeeper subject of 'interest' as contract comes to end

Out-of-contract Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Luke Steele is said to be the subject of “a bit of interest”.

The shot-stopper’s deal with the Reds is set to expire, with no suggestion a new one is in the offing.

Steele spent last season on loan at Millwall, rejoining them in January after his first spell had come to an end, while the last time he wore the Garibaldi was in May 2019.

He made two appearances for the Lions, both coming in the Carabao Cup last August, as the 35-year-old largely found himself as back-up for Bartosz Bialkowski.

Millwall boss Gary Rowett says he would be interested in bringing back Steele, who is from Peterborough, but expects him to go elsewhere in search of regular game time.

"I think he wants first-team football," Rowett is quoted on the ‘news at den’ website. "He's been brilliant for us, he's a great trainer. He's got a great attitude and is part of the reason why Bart's been pushed so hard.

“He's obviously the sort of player we'd be interested in having back.

"But I think he's coming towards the twilight of his career, if you like, and he wants to play and he probably doesn't want to be so far away from home. So I think it would be a difficult one.

"We'll see how it pans out.

“It's not something at the moment we're trying to do, and he's got a bit of interest from around where he is."
