Nottingham Forest boss Chris Hughton has made no secret of his admiration for James Garner but has given little away on whether he can return to the club from Manchester United next season.
Garner capped off an impressive loan stint at the club by opening the scoring on the final day against Preston North End, though Forest would eventually lose the game 2-1.
The 20-year-old will now return to United following the conclusion of his stint at the City Ground and a decision will need to be made on his future.
While Hughton is seemingly keen for Garner to return to the club, he has admitted the decision ultimately lies out of his hands.
“James knows what we think of him. And Manchester United know what we think of him. That’s probably all I can say, because he is a Manchester United player," he told Nottinghamshire Live.
“James and Manchester United will have the say on what happens to him next season. All I can say is we’ve been absolutely delighted with him.
“He’s come in and made an impact. Four goals from a midfield player in less than half a season is a wonderful return.”
Garner has just over 12 months remaining on his deal with United, though the club have an option to extend the contract by a further year, and spent the first half of the campaign with Watford.
Scottish champions Rangers are reportedly keen on a permanent swoop for the young midfielder, who made his Premier League debut as a late substitute against Crystal Palace in February 2019.
Garner has also featured in the Europa League previously for United and will be keen to earn more first-team opportunities next season, wherever he may find himself.
