Nottingham Forest favourite Michael Dawson reveals future plans as contract decision nears

Experienced Nottingham Forest defender Michael Dawson hopes he has “one more season” in him, before he considers hanging up his boots.

The 36-year-old has lost none of his passion for the game, though he admits he hasn’t played as much as he would have liked for the Reds this term.

Dawson was a regular in the side, partnering Joe Worrall, early on in the campaign, but lost his place to Tobias Figueiredo when he picked up an injury.

He has made 15 appearances so far in 2019/20, but just three of those have come since the turn of the year.

With the academy graduate out of contract this summer, a decision will soon need to be made on his future.

Forest head coach Sabri Lamouchi has previously urged the club to tie-up the centre-back for “the rest of his career”. And Dawson has hinted he is not ready to call time on his playing days just yet.

“I hope I can play one more season, and then you see how that goes,” he told talkSPORT.

“My body is feeling good. I love going into training and being around the lads.

“The manager has been great for me. I probably haven’t played as much as I would have liked after Christmas, but Toby and Joe Worrall have been fantastic.

“You’re there, but the older you get you know you’re not going to be able to play every game. You’re in and around it, you enjoy the buzz of the lads and you try to pass on any experience and any help you can to those players.”

When the time does come to retire, Dawson says he would consider a few options.

Lamouchi is among a number of those who have worked with him to suggest a move into coaching beckons.

The man himself said: “I’ve liked doing the media now and again when I’ve been involved. I’m doing my A Licence at the moment, so I need to get that finished off.

“We’ll see what opportunities come along, but I hope there’s another year left in me yet to keep on the grass and hopefully play a few more games.”
