Nottingham Forest fall short as Leeds United go up and Bristol City make sixth - How FM thought final day would go

In another world, today would have been a pivotal day for Bristol City.

The Robins were set to close out the Championship season today with a game against play-off rivals Preston North End until the coronavirus caused the world of sport to grind to a halt.

It could well have been a winner-takes-all clash for promotion, with Football Manager predicting the Robins to sit just a point ahead of Preston going into the final match of the season.

Sky Sports have now used the management simulation game to run through what would have been a dramatic final day in the Championship.

Team GD Pts
West Brom 32 85
Leeds United 26 84
Nottingham Forest 20 83
Brentford 42 77
Fulham 15 77
Bristol City -2 72
Blackburn 9 70
Millwall 8 68
Preston 5 68
Swansea City 3 67

It would have been good news for Bristol City, with the Robins running out 2-1 winners over Preston.

Goals from Callum O'Dowda and Famara Diedhiou were enough to secure City a place in the top six.

Elsewhere, West Bromwich Albion pipped Leeds United to the title thanks to their 1-0 win over QPR, which allowed them to finish a point clear at the top.

The title was in Leeds' own hands, but they crashed to a 3-1 defeat to Charlton Athletic at Elland Road, finishing the game with nine men.

Yet Leeds still won promotion, with Nottingham Forest unable to take advantage of their slip up.

Forest drew 0-0 with Stoke to finish third, just one point behind Leeds, and set up a play-off semi-final with Bristol City.

Brentford's 5-0 win over Barnsley saw them leapfrog Fulham and grab home advantage for the other semi-final, which would be a London derby.

At the other end of the table, Charlton's shock win saw them move to safety at the expense of Wigan Athletic, who were relegated on goal difference.

Middlesbrough also finished level on points with the Latics.

Barnsley's defeat to the Bees saw them also relegated.
