Nottingham Forest facing transfer battle as Evangelos Marinakis financial situation outlined

The wealth of football club owners has been a hot topic in recent weeks.

The £305m takeover of Newcastle United which was completed earlier this month turned them into one of the richest sides in the world.

And while Nottingham Forest chief Evangelos Marinakis may not be operating on quite the same scale as the Saudi Arabia-led consortium who bought the Magpies, he is still in a healthy financial position.

A show of trust in Marinakis’ shipping company, CPLP Shipping Holdings PLC, has led to record success when a 150m euros bond was issued, raising a significant amount of money.

Transfer policy

Recruitment will be the key to Steve Cooper steering Nottingham Forest to success, according to club legend Frank Clark.

The Reds have had a high turnover of players in recent years, including this summer when a total of 18 departed and 10 signings were made.

European Cup winner Clark says transfer business is an area where the club have fallen short in their bid to secure promotion to the Premier League.

They have looked to address that by making changes to the recruitment set-up behind the scenes - as well as with the arrival of Dane Murphy as CEO - while Cooper will get his first chance to put his mark on the squad in January.

Brewster battle

Nottingham Forest could have a fight on their hands if they do look to sign Sheffield United youngster Rhian Brewster in January.

The Reds have been linked with a loan move for the attacker when the transfer window opens, with reports suggesting they are monitoring his situation.

Brewster has been struggling for regular game time this term, making just three Championship starts for the Blades.

Since his big money move to Bramall Lane from Liverpool in 2020, 20 of his 38 appearances have come from off the bench. And his only goal for the club so far came against Carlisle United in the Carabao Cup back in August.

Hughton return?

Former Nottingham Forest boss Chris Hughton is said to be among the potential contenders for the Cardiff City job.

The 62-year-old was axed by the Reds last month, less than a year after taking charge, as he paid the price for a dismal start to the season which had left the team rock bottom of the table.

But he could be among the contenders to replace Mick McCarthy in the Bluebirds’ hot-seat as they look to arrest their own miserable form.

WalesOnline report Cardiff have been “inundated with applications from managers” and have also “drawn up their own initial hit-list of candidates”.
