Nottingham Forest face Joe Worrall battle with Premier League new boys but Hughton stance clear

Nottingham Forest favourite Joe Worrall is reportedly on Norwich’s radar as they bid to strengthen their squad for their Premier League return.

The boyhood Reds fan is attracting interest from the Canaries, who are now getting ready for next season in the top flight having achieved promotion from the Championship recently.

The Sun report that Daniel Farke wants four players to bolster his squad, including a centre-back, of which Worrall is on the shortlist.

It is far from the first time that Worrall has been linked with Premier League clubs, with Forest managing to hold off Burnley interest over the past couple of windows to keep him at the City Ground.

Forest are in a strong position as Worrall’s contract, signed in February last year, runs to the summer of 2024.

That’s not a guarantee that the Reds will be able to keep the centre-back, as proven by Matty Cash’s move to Aston Villa shortly after signing a new deal last summer, but it would help them get a decent fee.

But Chris Hughton is certainly not considering a departure for Worrall, given his quality and his potential to be a captain.

“I would (want him to stay), because he’s a good player. And more importantly, he’s a good player for this football club,” Hughton said last month.

“It’s something that comes with playing well, and that’s always a good sign.”

“Joe is a good player, and we want as many good players in the team as possible.

“He’s been very, very good for me in my period of time at the club.

“That’s the most important thing, that he’s a good level of player.

“But you also want as much influence in the changing room as possible, and you want as many good characters in the changing room as possible. He would be that.

“We’ve got a lot of experience in the dressing room. Joe is a younger one but has got an older head.

“He wouldn’t be the first one of that making. But you want as many good, serious footballers as possible. Joe falls into that category.

“He is still a young player.

“In some terms he’s not, because he’s played a lot of football and a lot of games, but still, by age, he’s a youngish player.

“And yes, he’s captain material."

The 24-year-old has played 31 games in all competitions this season, while he has now racked up 135 appearances since making his debut for the club in 2016.
