Nottingham Forest 'face fresh competition' for £20m-rated defender ahead of key transfer window

Interest in Nottingham Forest-linked Andrew Omobamidele appears to be growing ahead of the summer transfer window officially opening this week.

The Reds were said to have sent scouts to watch the Norwich City defender earlier this year as they kept tabs on his progress. They weren’t the only ones monitoring him even then, and it seems his list of admirers has only grown.

According to the Sheffield Star, newly-promoted Sheffield United are keen. The Blades are said to have “made contact” with the Canaries about a possible deal for one of their players.

However, Omobamidele’s price tag could prove to be a stumbling block for Paul Heckingbottom’s side. The 20-year-old is reportedly valued at about £20 million, with Norwich sporting director Stuart Webber having claimed a bid worth that amount was rejected in January.

Previous reports suggested the Canaries would consider selling the youngster for the right price. Several European clubs have also been linked, including Italian heavyweights AC Milan, French side Nice and Leicester City.

Republic of Ireland international Omobamidele made his senior debut for Norwich in January 2021, but the 2022/23 campaign proved to be his real breakthrough season. He was a regular starter in the Championship, making 35 appearances in total.

Forest could look to strengthen their centre-back ranks during the transfer window. They do have a number of them on their books, but with several due to see their contracts expire in 2024, this is about the time when decisions are usually made over whether to offer fresh terms or look to cash-in.

Steve Cook has already said discussions will take place over his future, after he was left out of the 25-man squad for the second half of the season. Jonathan Panzo and Loic Mbe Soh could also move on, having been out on loan.
