Nottingham Forest 'expected to hold talks' with Newcastle United about Jack Colback on deadline day

Nottingham Forest are reportedly “expected” to hold talks with Newcastle United today about potentially re-signing Jack Colback.

The midfielder has been a target for the Reds this summer, following two impressive loan spells at the City Ground.

But a change in manager at St James’ Park had seemingly offered him a fresh start in the north east under Steve Bruce, with the 29-year-old having played a part for the Magpies in pre-season.

The Northern Echo, however, claim all that could be about to change.

Bruce has to name a 25-man Premier League squad by the end of the week, with only 22 of them permitted to be outfield players.

Newcastle are said to currently have 27 senior outfield players on the books, following the arrival of Emil Krafth.

And the Echo say, as a result, Colback and several other players have been told they are free to leave.

The report adds: “Colback had been expected to re-join Nottingham Forest, having spent last season on loan at the City Ground.

“Martin O’Neill’s departure as Forest boss muddied the waters somewhat, but the Northern Irishman’s successor, Sabri Lamouchi, retains an interest in the midfielder and discussions are expected to take place this morning.”

The Newcastle Chronicle though, have reported that Colback is “desperate to stay” at United.

Bruce himself has said there will be players left disappointed when he names his final squad.

“By the end of this week I have to name a 25-man squad with three goalkeepers," he said.

“The awful side of my job is that you have to disappoint a few players.

“All of them have really had a go for me but I can only pick 22 (outfield players).”
