Nottingham Forest 'discuss' transfer for James Garner alternative

Nottingham Forest have reportedly started discussions over signing Southampton midfielder Will Smallbone as an alternative to James Garner this summer transfer window.

Garner, 21, played a pivotal role in the Reds' promotion to the Premier League this season and formed a strong relationship in midfield with Ryan Yates. The Manchester United loanee appeared 49 times in all competitions, scoring four goals and providing an assist.

The midfielder played a big part in the Championship play-off final winning goal against Huddersfield Town on Sunday, with his delivery in the box causing Levi Colwill to put the ball into his own net.

Forest are said to be keen on securing Garner for a further campaign at the City Ground, but are reportedly set to have competition in Leicester City and Leeds United. It has previously been reported that new United boss Erik ten Hag is keen to watch Garner during pre-season before making a decision on his future.

However, Steve Cooper has reportedly already started drawing up alternatives if they are unable to bring Garner back to Nottingham for their first season in the top flight for 23 years. According to Stretty News, the Reds have started "early discussions" over a possible move for Smallbone.

The 22-year-old midfielder broke through the Southampton academy and has been a consistent figure in Ralph Haselhuttl's side since. Smallbone has made 20 first team appearances since making his professional debut in January 2020.

It is said that the Saints man would be brought in as a direct replacement for Garner and would add Premier League experience to Cooper's side.
