Nottingham Forest departure expected as defender on verge of January transfer

Defender Nicholas Ioannou looks set to become one of the first departures from Nottingham Forest during the January transfer window.

The full-back is believed to be closing in on a move to Greek side Aris Thessaloniki, as the Reds look to trim numbers this month.

Ioannou only made the move to the City Ground from APOEL in September, when he put pen to paper on a four-year contract, and has featured just five times in the Garibaldi.

His last appearance came in the 1-1 draw at Luton Town back in October, when he was sent off in the first half at Kenilworth Road.

But he is now expected to leave Forest for Aris, with a loan deal until the end of the season most likely.

Overseeing departures is a priority for Reds boss Chris Hughton during the window, as he looks to manage a smaller squad - and potentially make room for incomings.

Yuri Ribeiro has cemented his place as first-choice left-back under Hughton in recent weeks, while Gaetan Bong and Tyler Blackett will provide back-up should Ioannou’s move go through as expected.

Sources in Greece suggest the Cyprus international is expected to head to Aris in the coming days to complete the switch.

Asked about speculation linking Ioannou with a move, Hughton recently said: “What I do understand is that there will be speculation, and particularly with players who are not playing and haven’t been in the squad.

“I can understand that one.

“As regards that speculation, that I don’t know. I must admit, I don’t know anything about that one.

“There will be lots more speculation, and particularly about those players who haven’t featured so much.”
