Nottingham Forest defender targeted for summer move after impressive loan spell

Blackpool are believed to be keen to re-sign Nottingham Forest defender Jordan Gabriel this summer, following his promotion-winning loan spell.

The 22-year-old spent the season just gone with the Seasiders, helping them to secure a place in the Championship via the play-offs.

He made 35 appearances in total for Neil Critchley’s side and scored his first professional goal earlier in the campaign.

His stint ended at Wembley, when a Lincoln City team featuring fellow Reds youngster Brennan Johnson were beaten 2-1 last weekend.

Gabriel was an unused substitute in that final but still impressed overall during his time at Bloomfield Road.

He is understood to have attracted admiring glances from elsewhere, and Blackpool are said to be interested in bringing him back on a permanent basis.

Gabriel had been battling with Ollie Turton for the right-back spot throughout his time at the club. However, the latter has turned down the offer of a new contract and agreed a move to Huddersfield Town, potentially opening up a place in the team.

The Mirror claim Portsmouth are also keeping tabs on the youngster.

Gabriel is expected to be given a chance to stake his claim at the City Ground, though, with Reds boss Chris Hughton set to assess those who have been out on loan during pre-season.

Fulham loanee Cyrus Christie made the position his own over the past year, but has returned to Craven Cottage, where a one-year extension clause in his contract has been activated.

Carl Jenkinson is among a group of players told they are free to move on this summer, which would leave Gabriel as the most senior right-back as things stand.

Hughton has been in contact with the Nigel Doughty Academy graduate this term, along with the other young players plying their trade elsewhere, and has said: “He’ll return to pre-season training and it will give me a really good opportunity to have a look at him.”
