Nottingham Forest defender could he handed chance to kickstart career abroad

Nottingham Forest defender Nicholas Ioannou could be set for a permanent move back to his homeland.

The left-back spent the second half of last season on loan at Greek side Aris having only made five appearances for Forest.

His prospects back in Nottingham look limited even though fellow left-back Yuri Ribeiro is set to leave at the end of his contract.

Forest have Tyler Blackett already and have been linked with a move for Oxford's Josh Ruffels, while Gaetan Bong is understood to be free to find another club.

Now the Cyrpus international is being chased by two clubs back home, according to Cypriot outlet 24sports.com.

They say AEK Lanarca boss Xavi Roca is keen to sign Ioannou with Anorthosis also keen.

They are managed by former Newcastle forward Temuri Ketsbaia, who was manager of APOEL when Ioannou was a player there.

Last month, Ioannou's father said he would be happy to stay on at Aris.

In an interview with Yellow Radio, via Sportime, he said: “He is happy with the facilities, with the team level that is high. This has to do with both the management of Aris and the coach.

“Nicholas belongs to Nottingham Forest, he is positive about staying (at Aris) but the two teams must find each other.

“Of course, it also depends on his appearances, on whether the people of Aris will be satisfied and will want to keep him.”

Ioannou joined Forest on a four-year contract last year but the move has not panned out as hoped for the 25-year-old.

The former Manchester United defender was sent-off against Luton last October and has not played for Forest since.
