Nottingham Forest deal confirmed as pundit makes worrying claim

Dawson signs

Defender Michael Dawson has put pen to paper on a new Nottingham Forest contract, to extend his time at the City Ground.

And he says agreeing to stay on at the club where he started his career - if fresh terms were offered - was never in any doubt.

The 36-year-old’s deal was due to run out this summer but he has signed on for another year, keeping him with the Reds until 2021.

With Sabri Lamouchi’s men set to resume their promotion push this weekend, he hopes that will mean he gets the chance to wear the Garibaldi in the Premier League.

Contract reaction

Michael Dawson admits it will be “a sad day” when he finally hangs up his boots. But that time is not yet, and the Nottingham Forest veteran is certain he still has more to give.

The Reds defender has signed a new deal which will keep him at the City Ground for another year, until 2021, as his previous contract was set to expire this summer.

At 36, while Dawson may be in the twilight of his career, he has the same enthusiasm and passion for the game as he did when he first pulled on the Garibaldi, back in 2002.

If anything, the fire seems to burn that little bit brighter as he targets what would be a “special” promotion with the club where he started his career.

Lichaj exit confirmed

Former Nottingham Forest defender Eric Lichaj will play no further part for Hull City this season, after it was announced he will leave the club.

The American, who was something of a fans’ favourite during his time at the City Ground, will become a free agent when his contract with the Tigers expires at the end of this month.

He was one of four players who have failed to agree new deals and will be released by Hull, along with Jackson Irvine, Stephen Kingsley and Marcus Maddison.

Lichaj turned down the opportunity to sign an extended contract that would cover the final nine games of the campaign, with the Championship getting back underway this weekend.

Pundit warning

Nottingham Forest will miss out on the Championship’s top six, according to former Aston Villa and Celtic forward Alan McInally.

Sabri Lamouchi’s Reds restart their season on Saturday with a testing trip to Hillsborough to face Sheffield Wednesday, knowing they have nine games remaining to secure their place inside the top six.

Having lost 3-0 at home to Millwall prior to the stoppage for Covid-19 back in March, Forest have a five point cushion to Bristol City in seventh, with Gary Rowett’s Lions a point further back on 54.

Preston find themselves occupying the final play-off berth, four points adrift of Forest with Blackburn Rovers just three points behind North End, and the Sky Sports pundit believes both Lancashire clubs will join Fulham and Brentford in the top six, at the expense of Lamouchi’s men.
