Nottingham Forest could face the side that launched the careers of Maradona and Riquelme

The season is not quite over for Nottingham Forest just yet… as the Reds’ under-23 side head to Holland for an international tournament this weekend.

And they could end up facing the team that helped launch the careers of legends like Maradona and Riquelme.

The Esad Osmanovski Tournament in Breskens will see the Reds face NAC Breda, Gent and Brugge in three shortened games in the space of a day on Saturday May 25.

A second group will pitch together legendary Argentinian side Boca Juniors, Sparta Rotterdam, Espanyol and Royal Antwerp.

Brennan Johnson celebrates flicking in his second goal to make it 2-1 with Jayden Richardson and Jake Taylor (Dan Westwell)

There will then be two semi-finals and a final on Sunday May 26, to decide the winner of the tournament, which is held in honour of a young footballer who died in 2004.

The tournament, in which QPR, West Ham and Fulham have all taken part previously, will provide one last test for the Reds youngsters, before they depart on their summer break.

And attacking midfielder Brennan Johnson says he is looking forward to the challenge of facing a different kind of opposition.

“We have a tournament in Holland, which should be good,” he said. “We have two days of playing games. There are three games in one day and then a semi-final and a final next day.

“Hopefully we can end the season with a trophy.

“Boca Juniors are going to be there, as well as a NAC Breda and a few other sides, including more Dutch teams.

“It will be interesting to play against different opposition. It will almost be like international football, in a sense. Because we will come up against different styles of play and different kinds of players.”
