Nottingham Forest chief Evangelos Marinakis makes major Olympiacos transfer decision

Nottingham Forest’s sister club Olympiacos have announced that former Real Madrid star James Rodriguez has left the club with immediate effect.

The midfielder only arrived at the club in September, joining from Qatari side Al-Rayyan, but is now on the lookout for a new club. He made a total of 23 appearances for Olympiacos, scoring five goals and providing a further six assists.

It means that the 31-year-old will now be available to sign for a new club at any time, due to being a free agent. Any Premier League club will however have to have space in their squad submitted to the league if he was to sign before the end of the season.

He was a star of the 2014 World Cup as he fired Colombia to the quarter-finals, winning the golden boot in the process to earn a move to Real Mardrid. He then had an unsuccessful stint in the Premier League after joining Everton from Real Madrid in the summer of 2020. In his one year at Goodison Park he played a total of 26 times in all competitions, scoring six goals and providing a further nine assists.

Olympiacos are owned by Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis, meaning that there is an association between the two clubs. Forest summer signing Josh Bowler spent the first half of the season on loan with the Greek side, but found game time hard to come by.

The former Blackpool man cut his loan spell short and is now back on a temporary deal with his former club where he has found more game time.

The decision to part ways with Rodriguez comes just one week after manager Jose Miguel Gonzalez resigned as manager of the club following a 2-2 draw in the Greek Super League Play-offs.

The side lost 4-2 on aggregate against AEK Athens in the semi-final of the Greek Cup on Wednesday night, despite a 2-1 win in the second leg. They currently sit third in the league, six points off leaders Panathinaikos.
