Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper responds to question on his future after Aston Villa loss

Head coach Steve Cooper reiterated his stance that he isn’t thinking about his own future after Nottingham Forest dropped into the bottom three for the first time since January.

Amid talk about the Welshman’s position, owner Evangelos Marinakis publicly backed him in midweek, with the Greek seeking to put an end to “speculation”. But he also stressed results must improve “immediately”.

That did not happen at Villa Park, with the Reds’ winless run extending to nine games as they fell 2-0. After a decent first half in which they frustrated Aston Villa while also offering some promise on the counterattack, a poor individual error from Jonjo Shelvey proved costly. Bertrand Traore gratefully accepted the chance to net the opener, and Ollie Watkins rubbed salt in Forest’s wound in added time.

Asked whether there was a suggestion his position might be reviewed on a game by game basis, Cooper said: “I’m not sure about that. It’s not something I think about.

“I think about the results and the performances, of course, but not in terms of the impact of what people are thinking. I’ve said before, it’s just not the way I’m made.

“I just want to work as hard as I can and try to do a better job with the players and getting better results. What that means for anything else is something I just don’t think about. I just want to try to do my job.”

The Reds boss added he had not spoken to any of the club hierarchy before facing the media after the game. Forest have eight games remaining, starting at home to Manchester United a week on Sunday.
