Nottingham Forest boss on possibility of transfer deadline day incomings and outgoings

Nottingham Forest boss Chris Hughton says he doesn’t expect any further signings before the transfer window closes - but there could be some outgoings.

The Reds started deadline day with the addition of Glenn Murray from Brighton and Hove Albion, having already extended Anthony Knockaert’s stay from Fulham and brought in James Garner and Filip Krovinovic, on loan from Manchester United and Benfica respectively.

Heading in the opposite direction, Nicholas Ioannou, Tendayi Darikwa and Zach Clough have departed.

And Hughton says striker Miguel Angel Guerrero would be free to leave, while youngster Will Swan could yet head out on loan.

GARIBALDI RED: The more important transfer window for Nottingham Forest is in the summer

“You never know, but at this moment I don’t anticipate anybody else coming in. But you never know,” Hughton said.

“We’ve made it known to Miguel and his representatives that if there are those opportunities (he could leave).

“We’re quite hopeful something will be done.”

Guerrero joined Forest in the summer window but has largely been restricted to a substitutes’ role, with six of his 11 appearances coming from off the bench.

He has been linked with a move to Espanyol, with the arrival of Murray pushing him further down the pecking order.

Midfielder Harry Arter, too, only joined in the summer but has struggled to make an impact, with his future also cast into doubt - Bristol City reportedly monitoring his situation.

Asked about the former Bournemouth man and whether anyone other than Guerrero could leave, Hughton told NottinghamshireLive: “I am very conscious that there will be some decisions to be made as regards the squad.

“The answer to that one (other exits) is, I don’t know.

“If I had to say yes or no, probably the answer would be, no, I don’t see anybody else going.

“But this is the window. This is the last day of the window.

“There will be a lot of business around the leagues done today, so these things you never know.

“We’ll have to wait a few more hours to see.”

The focus for Hughton this month has been on strengthening his attacking resources enough to help his goal-shy side.

They go into Tuesday night’s clash sitting just one place and three points above the relegation zone.

But the manager believes he has a squad capable of pulling away from danger.

Glenn Murray signs for Nottingham Forest from Brighton and Hove Albion (Nottingham Forest FC)

“I am confident we’ve got a group of players to get us up the table. That is very much the aim and the objective,” he said.

“I don’t think we’ve been too far away in a lot of games.

“What the squad has given me is a lot of choices. It’s making sure of the right choices for the right games.

“We’ve found this division to be very competitive; probably the most competitive it’s been for a number of years.

“We’re going to have to be at our best in every game to get the points we need.

“As regards the squad I’ve got, and am I confident we can get away from the position we’re in, then yes, I am.”
