Nottingham Forest boss monitoring loan youngster as six players out injured

Boss Chris Hughton says he is monitoring the progress of on-loan Nottingham Forest youngster Brennan Johnson.

But he would not be drawn on whether he may look into the prospect of recalling the 19-year-old in January.

Johnson has been in fine form for the League One Imps, scoring two goals in nine appearances - including a brilliant solo effort in a 6-3 FA Cup victory over Forest Green Rovers.

He was also handed his first senior international cap last week, when he came off the bench during Wales’ goalless draw with the USA.

Injury latest

Boss Chris Hughton hopes to be boosted by the return of some of his injured players in the coming weeks, as Nottingham Forest head into a hectic run of fixtures.

Harry Arter is available to face Barnsley this week, having returned early from international duty with the Republic of Ireland as a precaution for a minor injury.

Fellow midfielder Samba Sow will be missing for the trip to Oakwell, due to a hamstring problem, after being substituted in the 2-0 victory over Wycombe Wanderers before the break.

And while Hughton will also still be without defenders Joe Worrall (foot), Tyler Blackett (unspecified injury) and Michael Dawson (calf), as well as midfielder Fouad Bachirou (hamstring) and striker Lewis Grabban (hip), he says they are closing in on a comeback.

On the lookout

Former Nottingham Forest defender Greg Halford says he is willing to play for free, to get his career “up and running again”.

The 35-year-old, who spent three years with the Reds from 2012 to 2015, is a free agent and on the lookout for a new club.

He has been without a team since the summer of 2019, when he left Aberdeen, but says he has had a pre-season with an unnamed side.

And he has taken to social media site Linkedin to say he is prepared to play without pay until January, in a bid to secure a move.

Looking back

Nottingham Forest had a broken dressing room with the potential to hit the club's lowest ebb in most of Nathan Tyson's first six months at the City Ground.

When he joined in November 2005, players disliked the manager Gary Megson to the extent they wanted out.

His successor Colin Calderwood clearly got wind of the lack of harmony in the squad and on his first day at the club called the players together for a meeting to set his agenda, Tyson says.

At the front of the room was a board with a large sheet of paper on it. Players were invited to sign their name in front of the squad if they wanted to leave Forest. At least one did.

"Everyone was like 'wow' but he came in with authority," Tyson told the Garibaldi Red podcast.
